Week 6 Day 1 - Monday, Sept 30 - Homework

1. Begin conceptual phase of project 2. Brainstorm 5 possible tasks in your sketchbook.

Questions to consider in your brainstorming process:

  • What is the goal of the task? 
  • How many steps are involved?
  • Who is the target audience of this task?
  • Task geared towards specific age range? Gender? Experience level? etc. 
  • Can someone with limited experience in this subject understand how to accomplish this task? If not, what kind of prior knowledge does your task require? 
  • Is your task too difficult to diagram in a poster?
  • Is the task too simplistic? due Monday, Oct 7 8:30am.

Project 2: Instructional Diagram


Description:
Create an instructional diagram that teaches a focused target audience how to complete a specific task. The overall goal of the project is to communicate a concise and clear set of instructions, in the format of an illustrative poster, that explains the essential parts and operations of a chosen task.

Objectives:
+ To gain experience with vector based drawing tools and techniques.
+ To reinforce design principles that support visual choices in creative problem solving solutions.

Specifications:
Size: Tabloid sized (11" x 17") white paper
Media: Photographs, photomontage used as drawing references. The assembly of your final composition must be done using Adobe Illustrator. Limited color use allowed.
Text: Title must be set in Franklin Gothic Bold 36pt or larger; all other text, if used, should be kept to a minimum (phrases + labels) and must be set in Franklin Gothic. You may not illustrate your own typeface.

Timeline + Deadlines:
Conceptual Brainstorming: Brainstorm 5 possible tasks in sketchbook due Monday, Oct 7 8:30am.
Thumbnail Sketches: Create 5 different + distinct layout sketches (each) for chosen task due Wednesday, Oct 9, 8:30am.
Project 2 Midpoint Group Crit: Choose best task and generate components in full sized layout due Monday, Oct 28, 8:30am.
Project 2 Final Critique: Printed comp and all process work due Monday, Nov 4, 8:30am.

Grading criteria (projects averaged into 50% of overall course grade)
Process (Brainstorming, Sketches, Layout, Refinement)—20%
Technical Skill—30%
Aesthetics & Communication—50%

Week 5 Day 2 - Wednesday, Sept 25 - Homework

Final Critique for Project 1 will take place next class, Monday, Sept 30 at 8:30am.

What to submit:

1. Typographic Self Portrait printed on 11"x17" paper (black & white, Luna MatteText paper only) due promptly and pinned to front wall no later than 8:30am.

2. USB Flash Drive with following Proj 1 files (organized and labeled similar to the screenshot below)



>>Main Project folder with naming structure: FullName_Project1_ART216
>>"Design Files" folder (with Midpoint Design and/or Final Design Illustrator files)
>>"Output PDFs" folder (with PDF of Midpoint Design and Final Design)
>>"Process Docs" folder (with PDF or JPG scan of initial sketches + text content brainstorming, mind mapping, etc)

Prints and USB drive must be submitted by start of class session (Monday at 8:30am). Late work (even 1 min late) will be subjected to penalties.

***Classroom will be open at 8:00am on Monday, please be sure to plan submission of work accordingly.

Week 4 Day 2 - Wednesday, Sept 18 - Homework

1. Continue working on Project 1. Mini group critiques will be conducted next class, Monday, Sept 23.  Please print out your typographic portrait for group critiques by 8:30am.

Print output should be as follows:
  • 11"x17" (Bright White Laser or Luna Matte Text paper only) 
  • Black and white only (no color) 
If using the UI Print Center please plan ahead. If you do not have your printed document in class by 8:30am, your project (progress) will be marked as late.

Week 4 Day 1 - Monday, Sept 16 - Homework

1. Continue to work on layout for Typographic Self Portrait Project. Midpoint group critiques will take place next week, Monday, Sept 23.

**We will be touring the UI Print Center next class.


Keep in mind the overall focus of the project is to examine how typographic letterforms communicate insight into your personality. Be sure your composition takes into consideration the following questions next week (for midpoint crit)

  • Are you recognizable?
  • Is there meaning and significance to the font(s) used?
  • Is there meaning and significance to placement and overall style of the text content?
  • How are you clearly communicating personal traits through your use of type?
  • Does your project show appropriate application of varying typographic techniques in Illustrator?
  • What are the visual points of focus in your composition? How does that create balance in the composition?
