1. Begin Concept Process for Project 3. Brainstorm 5 journey thematic concepts in sketchbook due next class Monday, Nov 11 8:30am.

Project 3: The Journey: Digital Alphabet Book

Description:
Create a digital book that communicates the story of “a journey” through the 26 letters of the English alphabet. “The Journey” can be interpreted literally (as an act of travel) or metaphorically (journey of the mind, enlightenment, coming of age). Overall your visual translation of the alphabet should cohesively communicate a narrative regarding a specific journey.

Objective:
+ To gain experience with grid based layout design in InDesign.
+ To reinforce design principles that support visual choices in creative problem solving solutions.
+ To explore effective ways to tell a specific story through use of both imagery and type.

Specifications:
Size: Letter sized paper document (8.5" x 11"). Must include cover page and final page with all 26 alphabet components. 9 page minimum, 15 page maximum (includes cover and final alphabet layout page). Final deliverable must be a PDF file.

Media: Photographs, photomontage, illustrations, mixed media, etc. The appropriate use of Photoshop and Illustrator is expected. The assembly of your book layout must be done using InDesign. Aside from type used for alphabet, limited use of additional text is allowed. Keep in mind, you are not creating a typeface, but rather finding ways to use image and type effectively as a means for telling a rich story.

Timeline + Deadlines:
Conceptual Brainstorming: Brainstorm 5 journey thematic concepts in sketchbook due Monday, Nov 11 8:30am.

Project 3 Midpoint Group Crit: Rough layout of The Journey: Alphabet book due as PDF on Monday, Dec 2, 8:30am.

  • Is there meaning and significance to the font(s) used?
  • Is there meaning and significance to placement and overall style of the text content?
  • How are you clearly communicating personal traits through your use of type?
  • Does your project show appropriate application of varying typographic techniques in Illustrator?

Week 3 Day 2 - Wednesday, Sept 11 - Homework

1. Continue to work on layout for Typographic Self Portrait Project. Midpoint group critiques will take place in two weeks, Monday, Sept 23.

Monday, September 9, 2013

Week 3 Day 1 - Monday, Sept 9 - Homework

1. Choose at least two fonts you intend to use in your typographic self portrait. Style and visual aesthetic of fonts should be characteristic of your personality and take into consideration the ideas introduced in the typography lecture from class today.

2. Begin creating initial Layout Comps for Project 1. Based on advice and critique of concept ideas and portrait sketches, determine which sketch best captures your personality and the overall tone you wish to strengthen in defining yourself in a typographic self portrait. Generate basic typographic elements in a tabloid paper sized layout in Illustrator.

Keep in mind the overall focus of the project is to examine typographic letterforms that will illustrate multi-facets of yourself.

How do the lines, shapes, style of your letterforms, placement of letterforms, composition, black-white contrast tell the story about your personality? Don't be afraid to think metaphorically and conceptually. Also focus on the following overall project objectives:

+ To create an awareness of the image of typography.
+ To explore positive and negative space relationships in a design composition.
+ To experiment with the design element value in a black-and-white composition.
