Week 7 Day 2 - Wednesday, Oct 9 - Homework

1. Drawing Illustration Exercise 

Using Adobe Illustrator, create an illustration based off a photograph of an organic object or person. Page document size should be letter sized -- 8.5" x 11". Illustration and photograph due for review next class, Monday Oct 14.


























2. Begin working on illustrations for Project 2. Midpoint critique scheduled for Monday, Oct 28.

Please join us for the CAA Lecture Series events this week with Fine Artist Anna Kell. She will be presenting her work on Thursday, Oct 10 at 5pm in TLC 045 and running an Art Workshop on Friday, Oct 11 at 10:30am in AAN Rm 022.

Week 7 Day 1 - Monday, Oct 7 - Homework

1. Choose 1 out of your proposed task ideas for project 2, and create at least 5 different and distinct thumbnail sketches that will explore possible layout choices (number of steps, proposed imagery, etc). Sketches are due Wednesday, Oct 9, 8:30am.

2. Bring in a digital photograph (should be JPG format) of an organic object or person to next class.

ILLUSTRATOR DRAWING TOOLS KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS


V- Selection Tool (black arrow)

A- Direct Selection Tool (white arrow)
E- Transform Tool (to scale, rotate, etc)
P- Pen tool

Spacebar (hold) – temporarily switch to hand tool
Command (hold) – temporarily switch to Selection tool


CLOSED PATH OBJECTS
Geometric shape tools (rectangle, ellipse, rounded rectangle, star, polygon)

MODIFIER KEYS
Keyboard shortcuts used when click and holding down mouse (active drawing mode) to make drawing tools behave differently

Option/Alt --draw shape from center point
Shiftproportionally constrain an object
Spacebarreposition an object while in drawing tool

To create shape/object numerically- select drawing tool, just click anywhere on artboard, and fill in options


OPEN PATH OBJECTS
Line Segment Tool (hold down shift to constrain line angles to 45 degrees)
Arc Tool (modify degree of curve with up/down arrow keys, press F or X to flip direction of curve)
Spiral Too (press up/down arrows to increase/decrease # segments; press alt/option to rotate spiral)


MODIFYING OPEN AND CLOSED PATHS

Use Direct Selection Tool (white arrow) to move and modify anchor points (and beizer curve handles)

Use Direct Selection Tool (white arrow) to convert anchor to corner point (curved with beizer handles) or smooth point (angular)

Hold down Alt/option with Direct Selection tool (white arrow) tomove single beizer curve handle attached to anchor point

Use Selection tool (black arrow) to connect two or more separate open path objectsSelect paths or anchor points to join, andpress Command+J to join anchor points
